PROJECT DESCRIPTION
This mural was created in partnership with Groundswell and NYC Lab Middle School for Collaborative Studies. It memorializes Jabulani Summers, age 11. He is speaking a Maya Angelou quote through a megaphone which is followed by silhouette images of youth playing, reading and interacting. The Lab School mascot, the Alligator, also makes an appearance.
The creation of this mural had a cathartic effect on the Summers family as well as the school and community. Adanna, the sister of Jabulani, participated in the mural design and painting. Many of her ideas shaped the mural design, including the depiction of her brother holding the megaphone. Her whole family attended the community design sharing and dedication. Her mother and grandmother gave a special thanks to both Lab School classes that participated, stating that there were no words to express what this mural meant to them.
This mural had a huge impact on the school community and aided in the process of healing for the loss of Jabulani. Many students offered support and encouragement for the mural, and those who knew him took lead roles in designing and painting.
