PROJECT DESCRIPTION
This mural was created in partnership between Groundswell and Aspirations High School. Imagery is based on observations of the immediate neighborhood and environment, and using the resources of the library, internet and accessible technology, participants explored urban themes through the first Da Vincian Principle –
Curiosità – the insatiable curious approach to life and unrelenting quest for continuous learning. Through a “mind mapping” approach, the group compiled notes on subjects, observations, and musings relating to characteristics of the city.
Free-association exercises allowed for unique insights and understanding of the city as a living thing, with both similarities and contrasts to the systems of organisms. Using photography, drawings, diagrams, schematics, charts, maps, patterns and textures, block-party collaborations on transparent vellum allowed for the juxtaposition of various elements through an urban aesthetic lens.
The mural is presented as a triptych of cylindrical pillars. Essentially, each design wraps a cylinder creating an image that is continuous to the left and right in either direction. The design is seamless and reveals no position where ends meet. The curved surface provides an uninterrupted flow of each chapter in the series that can only be viewed by walking around each pillar.
