PROJECT DESCRIPTION

This mural was created by the students of Northside School. As a group, they explored the idea of Utopia or a perfect day in their community. The mural’s main subject matter is centered around a “machine” that can take one anywhere at anytime and is powered by lightening. Japanese Cranes are visible on the right hand side of the mural as a symbol of reflection. The students had been studying about the tsunami in Japan and wanted to include the crane in response.

This project used art as a tool to engage these young students in true collaboration. The response to the project has been positive by the participants, parents, faculty and community. The process raised awareness in the students as to the impact that public art can have in their community.
