PROJECT DESCRIPTION

This mural was created in partnership between Groundswell and the NYC Department of Transportation.  It builds on the 2009 project coordinated by the Urban Art Program’s barrier beautification initiative, entitled “Worker Bees.”  The mural consists of two separate designs, one for each side.

The nine panels facing vehicular traffic reference transformation and motion, depicting a single sheet of paper transforming from a plane into a boat and is designed to be “read” from either direction of traffic, like a palindrome. The nine panels facing pedestrian and bicyclists augment “Worker Bees”, adding images of flowers and flora in large scale to the existing mosaic, inviting passersby to imagine themselves as the characters in the mosaic.
