PROJECT DESCRIPTION

In partnership with Eugene Lang College, Groundswell taught a mural painting class during the spring semester in 2008. Youme Landowne worked with students to create ‘Encrucijadas’ (Crossroads), a reinterpretation of Diego Rivera’s “Man at the Crossroads Looking with Hope and High Vision to the Choosing of a New and Better Future”. The original Rivera mural was commissioned for the Rockefeller Center and destroyed shortly after its completion in 1933 due to the inclusion of a prominent portrait of Soviet figurehead V.I Lenin in the composition.

The New School mural was created to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the completion of “Man at the Crossroads”, and was part of a world-wide effort to commemorate the spirit of the piece. This project marked the 2nd semester of collaboration between Groundswell and the New School.
