PROJECT DESCRIPTION

In spring 2008, Groundswell artists worked with PS 24 and the PAZ afterschool program to create a mural in the school’s lobby. The mural represents the children of PS 24 with an emphasis on the school community and their personal growth, both academically and as thinkers and dreamers. Activities were designed to have students consider what a community is, what makes it strong, and what best represents their community. Students were also asked in activities, visual, written and discussed, to consider their own individuality; their dreams, what they most care about, and what activities they do to realize their dreams. The population of the students at PS 24 is mainly comprised of 1st and 2nd generation immigrant children, so it was important to have them consider their own dreams, the dreams of their communities and how they intend on building a greater future for themselves.

Lead Artist Katie Yamasaki states, “Because the entrance where we were painting is the primary entrance for the staff of PS 24, I feel that the mural will serve as a reminder to the teachers that to nurture the dreams and imaginations of the children is just as important as nourishing their academic growth.”
