PROJECT DESCRIPTION
This project involved the creation of a mural for the new band room at Brooklyn High School of the Arts with a focus on musicians and band instruments and reflecting the geography of Brooklyn. The students made drawings of instruments, musicians and iconic Brooklyn imagery, which was woven into a final design. The composition features large scale portraits of youth musicians framed against iconic Brooklyn imagery (Williamsburg bank clock tower, Grand Army Plaza & the Brooklyn Bridge). The city skyline consists of silhouetted images of buildings in the shape of instruments, and against a night sky the silhouetted forms of two sax players form a symmetrical axis to the composition.
Working on a large-scale, the group worked after school two days a week to complete the mural, which was officially dedicated at the end of April with youth artists, school staff and principal in attendance. The final piece fills an entire wall of the school’s new band room.
